So, I replaced my old Vonage phone box (a clunky old Motorola thing) with a new Linksys VoIP phone adapter (much smaller and easier to set up).
No internet lag since.
I got the Linksys PAP2 ver. 2.

I wonder if the generic VoIP/cable modem thing that Comcast gave me is the source of my recent woes?
I got a good couple years out of my old Motorola Vonage box, and the thing still worked - it just was farging up my connection to the net all of a sudden. I suppose the thing is always-on; I should probably be happy it lived for 2 years.
