I enjoyed this article over at SitePoint.com. It talks about how to make more money by developing products by explaining the fundamental flaw in service business models: the requirement that you trade resources for dollars. When you develop a product, you can resell that product again and again, capitalizing on the resources you initially invested. In a perfect world, I think a web design business would do both: offer innovative products as well as service.
This article goes pretty in depth on choosing a target or niche market and breaking your new product into that market. Worth a read if you run your own service-based business.
